Vagamon – A Beautiful Hill Station

Vagamon is a hill station located in Kottayam-Idukki border of Idukki district of Kerala, India. Vagamon also known as the 'Scotland of Asia’ was discovered by the British who found the place ideal for tea plantations and they were followed by Christian missionaries who built their abode of service at Kurisumala in Vagamon. Today Vagamon is a very opular tourist destination. National Geographic Traveler has listed Vagamon on their directory of the '50 most attractive places to visit in India’.

Kurisumala hill is a popular tourist destination in Vagamon. Kurisumala means 'Mountain of the holy cross'. Kurisumala monastery situated on the Kurisumala hill, is a famous pilgrimage center for the Nazrani Catholics where cross put-up in each sub hill stations. The nearby Kurisumala Ashram is an abode of calm and spiritual delight. This hill area includes twelve sub mounds where pilgrims visit.

It is also a great place for tourists who enjoy treks and hill climbing. The area is completely surrounded with Tea estates and lakes, making the trekking trails picturesque and scenic.

Indo-Swiss Project Diary Farms is also a good way to pass the time and understand the local way of life. The Indo-Swiss Project dairy farm is situated on the Kurisumala hill. The dairy farm is managed by the Kurisumala monks.

Tourists can find peace and relax in the lush green Vagamon Meadows.The rolling green meadows of Vagamon houses a beautiful lake amidst them and makes it a wondrous marvel of Nature. It has for long been a favorite location for shooting films and songs.

Another peaceful retreat is the many Pine Forests. Rows upon beautiful rows of majestic pines give the valley a paradise like look and tourists can enjoy long quite walks in these forests.

Thangal Hill is beautiful and also a site of Muslim pilgrimage. There is an ancient cave here which stretches out for many kilometers and makes for an exciting exploration.

Mooppanpara is a v-shaped canyon located in Vagamon. It is one of the most admired view points. It is very steep and can also be very dangerous. The view from the summit of the strenuous climb is amazing.

The Murugan Hill is situated near Thangal Para. It is another scenic hill in this beautiful place. It is also famous for the Murugan temple. The temple devoted to Lord Muruga. The temple displays some striking Stone Age carving.

This sleepy, peaceful and scenic town has a pleasant climate in the Indian summer, so that is a good time to visit Vagamon.
