Pachmarhi



Known as the ‘Queen of Satpura Ranges’, Pachmari is the only hill station in Madhya Pradesh at an altitude of 3500 ft. Apart from being a civilian township, Pachmari also serves as an important army cantonment.

What adds to the beauty of Pachmari other than the pleasant weather is the magnificent view of Satpura ranges. Thick cover of greenery, surging waterfalls and ancient caves and temples make it an ideal getaway.

Pachmarhi is located in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh. Dhupgarh, the highest point of Madhya Pradesh, is also located in Pachmarhi.

Pachmarhi Park has been recognized as a biosphere preserve by UNESCO. Unstructured paths lead into peaceful forest basins, orchards of jamun and dense sal forests that are present around Pachmarhi.

In the shape of a saucer, Pachmarhi is pleasingly calm. Pachmarhi is a favourite honeymoon destination in central India.

HISTORY:

Archeological excavations in Pachmarhi have revealed artifacts dating back to 8000 BC. It was originally ruled by Gond tribals in the early 19th century. The British annexed the region in 1857.

An English officer who was sent to Satpura Jungles in 1857 to crush the war of Independence was followed by Captain James Forsyth. On his trail, he reached a 2000 ft high plateau. The area had dense forestation and surrounded by strong flowing streams.

On becoming the deputy Commissioner, Forsyth built a sanatorium in Pachmarhi. Pachmarhi was later turned into an army cantonment. Pachmarhi was the summer capital of the Central Provinces.

WHERE TO STAY:

There are limited accommodation options to choose from. Budget, mid-range and luxurious hotels are available in Pachmarhi. Most of them are situated on Raj Bhawan Road.

There are a few private cottages and bungalows as well in Pachmarhi.

MP Tourism runs a few low budget hotel accommodation and mid-budget rest houses.


WHERE TO EAT:

Options to stay are limited in Pachmarhi. Most hotels have in-house restaurants that serve Indian and Chinese cuisines. Pachmarhi offers a variety in terms of street food.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

Pachmarhi is an all weather destination as the climate is generally pleasant. However, September to May is the best time to visit. During summer, temperature reaches a maximum of 37 degree Celsius and in winter it generally records a minimum temperature of seven degree Celsius.
